Our Misson

EquiCite was created to solve a simple but urgent problem: visibility.

Traditional research tools and citation practices often elevate the same well-funded authors from the same well-known institutions. This “winner takes all” effect makes the visible more visible—while equally talented HBCU researchers remain overlooked. Citation is power, and when it flows unevenly, so does recognition, collaboration, and opportunity.

EquiCite builds a different future.

We are deliberately centering HBCUs in the research ecosystem, raising the visibility of scholars who have historically been excluded from mainstream citation networks. By amplifying their work, we ensure that HBCU scholarship is impossible to overlook and fully recognized for its global impact.

Our Approach

  • Prioritize Equity: Unlike traditional repositories that begin with R1 institutions, we start with HBCUs.

  • Ethical Data Practices: We use open science infrastructures, persistent identifiers, and commit to the FAIR and CARE principles of data stewardship.

  • Human-Centered Design: We design for the real needs of underrepresented researchers, ensuring the platform reflects their priorities.

  • Advanced Technology: We apply state-of-the-art algorithms and data models to surface research outputs—journal articles, conference proceedings, preprints, patents, theses—and reveal new opportunities for collaboration.

Our Vision

We believe research should be a tool for equity. By creating a platform that makes HBCU research more visible, discoverable, and citable, EquiCite is fueling the next data revolution—one rooted in justice, representation, and impact.
